This documentary chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, Restrepo, named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. It was considered one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. This is an entirely experiential film: the cameras never leave the valley; there are no interviews with generals or diplomats.

This is not a typical documentary film, but it is more documentary than just about all documentary films: there is not much by way of narrative, but there is a lot of documenting. The soldiers are the only ones who address the viewer (there are a few labels telling where and when things are happening) and the rest - most of the film - is showing the soldiers cleaning their guns, going to a village, engaging the enemy, eating, goofing around, and even dying. I was most surprised that none of them could speak Pashto, not even by the end of their time there (over a year!). Every adult citizen in the USA and each person considering going into the military would do well to watch this film to get a sense of what war is like from the soldiers' point of view.

Sebastian Junger's sequel to "Restrepo" is entitled "Korengal".

I have mixed feelings about war....& this only reaffirmed them all.

Ought to help neutralize some of the mythology being generated to glorify US troops in these presidential wars being fought for nothing at all. These guys volunteered to be there and were all foaming at the mouth to get a chance to kill someone in a firefight. No God and country idealism. They just want to kill someone. One of them even says what he'll miss most going back to the states is shooting at people.

Great documentary about an outpost in remote area of Afghanistan.
If you want to know about tactical decisions and firefight situations, this video will show you.

This is a good documentary on an American outpost in Afghanistan. I thought the camera work was too zoomed in during the interviews but overall done very well. Very sad to see how young these guys are and how the rest of their lives are going to be ruined from this. I wish politicians would watch this movie before they send soldiers on useless missions.

Violence: Although you don't see people being shot, or even blood, theres one scene where a sargent lays dead. Plus you 'hear' lots of violence, gun shots, etc & the veterans talking about killing the 'enemy'.

Coarse Language: Lots of various swear words used throughout
