Set in an Edwardian country house in 1912, Downton Abbey portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them. In the drawing rooms, library, and beautiful bedrooms, with their tall windows looking across the park, lives the family, but below stairs are other residents, the servants, as fiercely possessive of their ranks as anyone above.

It is only now that I finished viewing the whole series of Downton Abbey for the second time, and it made me share my views on this excellent production. The British are masters of producing TV series and this is very likely the best that has come from their “kitchen” so far. Everything is so perfect about it that one could call it “The British Gone with the Wind”. As the most successful American movie of all time, it is also a somewhat idealized and romanticized picture of the upper class of its time, and it is very entertaining to watch. Granted, the pompous lifestyle of the decadent aristocrats may be nauseating, but don’t be disproportionally judgmental and disgusted by the uselessness of the British aristocracy. There must be something attractive and worthy having, something we do not and only the British understand. After all, their aristocrats and the royalty survived despite all the social changes the British Imperium has gone through, and all classes in the Commonwealth worship the Royalty now maybe even more than ever. The writing and the dialogs in the Series, generously spiced with English humor are superb. The central protagonist in Gone in the Wind was played by the unforgettable Clark Gable and here it could not be picked better than when it was entrusted to Maggie Smith. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Series, and if you have time to sit through the whole set you will be richly rewarded.

Perfect mix of drama and comedy, set nostalgically in a time and culture that will never return.

This is a great series. For even more insight into the times and the manor houses, borrow and see the Iconic British Estates video that go into more detail.

You will meet Cora in these videos. She was not the only wealthy American woman to marry and save a manor house.

So I'm usually into the action, fantasy, sci-fi genre, I watched the first episode and I was totally totally totally hooked! I'm on season five now! Even though it is not fast-paced or action-packed, something about it is just so good! The actors are absolutely amazing, and the characters they portray are great and unique. They make you feel like you are living your life with them and you feel so attached to them! There are some super heart-breaking moments but there are some equally joyful and hilarious moments as well. Everyone in this time period is so polite while at the same time giving polite burns! It's hilarious!
I can't wait for the movie that is coming out this fall!!! :)

Even if you never watch this type of movie about nobility and patriarchs and aristocrats you will truly enjoy this show and it will draw you in until you find your self praying for one character over the other. The cast is extraordinary and the performances beyond any wild imagining are exquisite! I am glad I only watched bits and pieces from the actualy tv offering because it is priceless to be able to get the dvds for a couple of seasons at a time and week-end binge on Downton Abbey. HIghly appraised and for obvious reasons. It is remarkable how there are so many various activities and plots going on at the same time. I so wait for O'Bryan to get her come uppance and then there is the manipulative, misunderstood Thomas. The perfect formula of antagonists and heroines abound in this movie series. Highly suggest you take more than one season at a time because you Will NOT want to wait to see what happens next. I have laughed, cried and been amazed at the actions, the period, the entirety of this offering is so well worth the time! My thanks to the library staff for including it among its valuable offerings. Libraries offer such a valuable service and I am thankful!

I love everything about this show, from the casting to the time period, the wit and the drama. If you love period films but you want to settle in for something longer (how about six seasons?), then you won't be disappointed Downton Abbey.

I resisted watching this series for a long time because...well...how can watching a bunch of aritocrats going about their daily lives be of any interest? That'd equate to watching paint dry or grass grow...BUT...was I ever wrong.

I was hooked from the first episode, despite my preference for no-dialogue-action-hero movies. Great cinematography, characters, storyline, performers, and everything else you could think of to make a great tv show/movie. A must watch.

Perhaps my first incursion into the life of English nobility in the early 1900s, Downton Abbey certainly converted me. A great peek into the lives of both the nobility and their servants. Who knew how difficult and prestigious it was to be an upper ranking servant! The show also offers a unique look into the relationships between the upstairs and downstairs classes.

Downton Abbey has created what is quite possibly the perfect formula of television for my tastes. I cared about the characters in a way that I rarely do for other shows. I felt their pain and took joy in their victories. The stakes in Downton Abbey are very real. But the show isn't all doom and gloom! Romance is abound. Top that off with the quips of Lady Violet (Maggie Smith is in top form) and Carson's stern yet teddybear-esque demeanor and we have a wonderfully well-rounded show.
