I love this book. I'm an Associate Librarian with a degree in Education and I can't believe the small number of checkouts for this book! This book deserves a lot more checkout numbers! In that case, if you're a parent who is looking for a guidebook regarding your child's education...this is a great one to look at. It includes many things that I use it myself when I use to teach. These methods mentioned in the book are ones I actually recommend to parents.

This book was written by two elementary school teachers (and also parents). The book introduces the American elementary school system (both the US and Canada) from mostly the teacher's perspectives, in terms of how things are done at schools, what the teachers' point of views and styles are, and how parents can best work with the teachers for the benefit of their children.

The book is a quick read, written in a concise and no-nonsense fashion. It serves as a great guide for first-time parents whose children are entering kindergarten or for families from other countries who are transferring to the American school system.

In particular, the literacy and reading chapter provided a comprehensive reading list of books (based on age and types of books), which is very worth having at hand for a valuable reference.

There are several other chapters that are written very well. The Homework chapter is excellent, with tips on how to help children form a good routine doing homework. The text box with Homework Resources is another valuable reference for families. The Special Education chapter is also very well written and does a good introduction on families whose children have special needs.

The only complaint I can think of is that the book is much too short to cover each topic in great detail. It would probably be more helpful if the authors, at the end of each chapter, provided a "Further Reading" list, so that interested parents can find more resources to obtain detailed information on a particular subject (e.g., math, or special education, etc.).

Overall, this is a really valuable book for parents to understand how elementary school works, and is one of the very few books out there that does a good job covering this subject. Very worth reading and having.
