Introducing Gideon Crew: trickster, prodigy, master thief

At twelve, Gideon Crew witnessed his father, a world-class mathematician, accused of treason and gunned down.

At twenty-four, summoned to his dying mother's bedside, Gideon learned the truth: His father was framed and deliberately slaughtered. With her last breath, she begged her son to avenge him.

Now, with a new purpose in his life, Gideon crafts a one-time mission of vengeance, aimed at the perpetrator of his father's destruction. His plan is meticulous, spectacular, and successful.

But from the shadows, someone is watching. A very powerful someone, who is impressed by Gideon's special skills. Someone who has need of just such a renegade.

For Gideon, this operation may be only the beginning . . .

This is the book for a reader who wants a story long on action and short on characterization. Gideon is a former art thief who finds himself recruited into a secret government organization after avenging his father's death. After many near-death attempts, Gideon defeats his foe. This novel would actually make a great movie as it moves from glamorous to decaying locales.

This was a very fast paced story, well narrated by John Glover.

Gideon's illness may show up in another book, this audiobook was made in 2011, however I suspect the diagnosis was used to blackmail him into taking on the 'job'.

A bit James Bondish without the female beauties.

This is so very different from the other Douglas Preston (with or without Childs) I wouldn't have thought it was the same author.

I found it unbearably tedious and disappointing.

Read and loved Preston's and Child's individual and co-written books! Gideon is a bit of a mystery though. I'm sure this is going to be series so maybe we'll get the explanation of this fatal illness along with who he really is. Several pieces of unfinished business. Will be watching for book 2.

My first audiobook and loved it. I'm now hooked. Great way to commute to work!

This character is supposed to be smart and he does do some clever things. He also does some bonehead things that detracts from some good plot lines. 7 of 10 stars.
