Through Debt-Free Forever, more than 100,000 Canadian families have used Gail Vaz-Oxlade’s brand of money management to dig themselves out of debt. Her strategy is straightforward—it isn’t about neat tricks, hidden agendas and mysterious fixes. As Gail says, “Money isn’t rocket-science, it’s discipline.” Gail has made it her life’s mission to make money management something everyone can do. And she won’t take no for an answer. Hers is a style that’s unique, a voice that is demanding, an approach that is holistic.

Debt-Free Forever helps readers take back responsibility and control over their money. Gail’s Rules are simple: you can’t spend money you don’t have, you must save something and if you’re in debt, you must get the albatross off your back. That said, she knows that executing them can be hard. That’s why Debt-Free Forever will serve as a roadmap to getting out of debt, with carefully detailed plans, and Gail’s unfailing support to help readers get to the right destination.

Staff Pick: I love her TV show on Slice – Til Debt Do Us Part – and her other books have been great too. Here is a practical book on getting out of debt that is fun to read – it feels like she’s speaking to you from the pages, in the same tone as her show. Things that I learned:
*Cancelling a credit card isn’t always enough – you need to check your credit score to be totally sure. Ask for written confirmation from the bank that the account has been closed.
*Written requests for your credit score cost nothing. It is free once per year.
* You can save a lot of money on your mortgage by switching from a monthly payment to an accelerated weekly payment.
*I was not convinced by her arguments in favour of life insurance – I think that life insurance is only for people with dependents – and I don’t have any of those. But I’ll be looking into critical illness insurance.
*I need a will. I know it. And I should probably have a lawyer do it.

You can probably find things in this book that you didn’t know about money, budgeting, insurance, and getting yourself out of debt. Very useful.

Quick, basic read on setting goals to reach a debt-free status in this lifetime. Is it possible? I guess. But the more you try to free yourself of the system, the more it limits you. I like Gail's show: she's tough as nails, realistic, but kind and a good leader. Does it translate to fancy book writing? Not quite. The tone is like nails on a chalkboard, and horribly condescending in parts. Insulting, too, if you're sensitive. I don't think I'm sensitive, just pointing it out for others who might be. I picked up some good tips for myself, as this IS one of my goals in life. It got to be a bit repetitive, but I read most of it in one night. Thanks, Gail. I love your hair.

I think I have read one too many books by Gail Vaz-Oxlade this year. I have had more than my fair share of personal finance books in the last few months and I think this one may be my last for a while. While DEBT-FREE FOREVER has some terrific information on budgeting, including substantial appendices to assist those new to tracking their spending, I still feel that a great deal of what is written here is a rehash of what Gail has said in her other books. All of the information is valuable, but, for me, it's nothing new. For anyone new to budgeting, this book is a fantastic read, one that I highly recommend, but if you're thrifty like me, this book will be a huge waste of time.

Great easy to read and most importantly REALISTIC approach to becoming debt free. Compliments her television show and show's you how you can be debt free too. I have implemented her approach and am well on my way. Gail makes you think twice about your current spending in order to be prepared for the future. She doesn't sugar coat a thing, but doens't make you feel guilty about how you may have ended up in debt either, and gives you realistic ways to fix it. Easy to implement in your day to day life if YOU have the motivation to do so.

If you've ever watched Gail's show "Til Debt Do Us Part", you'll know what you're getting here. Straightforward, "no bull" advice which although may be difficult to follow at all times, will be good for you if you do. This book includes a lot of advice I wish someone had told me 25 years ago. Recommended.

I thought this book had some very good and practical advice. I recommend reading it to those people who have trouble managing their money. I did however find that the book was largely targeted towards overconsumers, and "shopaholics". I do agree that she has some great methods for developing better money managing skills, but I find it hard to relate to some of the things she talks about.

Best book for reducing and getting rid of your debt. I read it this time last year, followed the steps and now I am debt-free. Very straight forward, no mumbo jumbo and easy to follow. As previous poster said, a must buy and then share it with your friends & family.
