The Good Soldiers by Pulitzer Prize journalist David Finkel was a difficult read. He describes the horror of the American war experience in Iraq with an unflinching eye and it was unbearably sad to read of incidents that left young Americans dead or changed for life. Set in 2007, it is also unbearably sad to know that these kind of things are still happening in the Middle East today as the death and suffering continues.

An honorable experience that may get some thoughtful people to discourage young people from joining the service. David Finkel certainly deserves his genius foundation award for this compelling and compassionate epic.

A have nothing but praise and love for this book it was written beautifully, and did not try to force ideals or opinions on you, but, rather told the sad and heart-wrenching story of a group of men who are fighting a war they know they can't win.

A heart-wrenching look at the sacrifice of U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Finkel followed a battalion during "the surge," and what he found didn't remotely match the stories coming from Washington.

Well-written and sobering, this book isn't about the political machinations in Washington; rather, it tells the story of ordinary soldiers doing extraordinary things, and the heavy price many of them face.
