I was puzzled by English gentlemen defending the French flag ... until I noted that the film was released in 1939 (when the French needed English support). And is it too much to suggest that the 'stolen' gem signifies the threatened values of Western democratic states that are about to be 'lost' and must be restored? Powerful acting by Brian Donlevy as the tyrannical Foreign Legion sergeant.

An adventure tale of courage, duty and devotion. Brian Donlevy is great as Sergeant Markov, the French Foreign Legion's sadistic disciplinarian.

I would rate this classic film at 4.0 stars. It stands up well to the test of time.

Not the classic I was led to believe it was, for all these years. I'm glad I saw it once, but I can live without seeing ever it again. Maybe I just don't like Gary Cooper movies, outside of High Noon and The Fountainhead.
Semi-interesting story that was cleverly told, but I'll take Gunga Din or The Charge of the Light Brigade any day over it.
