The extras on this DVD added to my experience of seeing the film. The interview with Guy Maddin was particularly insightful, as it shows the filmmaker to be thoughtful in referencing other filmmakers. He mentions Chris Marker, and the similarities in My Winnipeg are distant, but still there. The dark atmospheric black-and-white of the film, and the voice-over about sleeplessness is particularly compelling. That he cast Ann Savage as his mother was a piece of inspiration! There was great tongue-in-cheek in this docu-comedy of Winnipeg. The best was the train sounds through streets at night which were obviously taken from an automobile. The train car where the somnambulists dreamt was contrived yet worked.

you can never know quite what to expect from Guy Madden. this imaginative history of Winnipeg was definitely large parts fantasia.

sometimes I have no idea what he is trying to do with his movies but my favourite of his is the filming of the Dracula ballet.

This is a fantastic film. Its constant narration and jittery frames are off putting at first, but once it gets going it is an a barrage of unpredictable, funny, and touching scenes. If this movie sounds like something you would enjoy, you probably will.

I really like this film. It's a great mix of fiction and nonfiction and kind of dreamlike (hence the other comment). However, instead of falling asleep, I find myself transfixed. I've seen it multiple times and have no problem with repeated viewings.

Black and white; grainy images; jittery frames. Typical of experimental-type cinema. Winnepeg in the 1920 was not a subject matter close to my heart. This narrated documentary is neither artistic nor entertaining. A disappointment.

useful if you are having trouble falling asleep. Will knock you out in less than 15 minutes.
