Grand Central Pub
Holidays on Ice collects six of David Sedaris's most profound Christmas stories into one slender volume perfect for use as a last-minute coaster or ice scraper. This drinking man's companion can be enjoyed by the warmth of a raging fire, the glow of a brilliantly decorated tree, or even in the backseat of a van or police car. It should be read with your eyes, felt with your heart, and heard only when spoken to. It should, in short, behave much like a book. And, oh, what a book it is!

Baker & Taylor
An anthology of humorous Christmas tales and essays features excerpts from the author's "Barrel Fever" and "Naked," as well as "The Santaland Diaries," "Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family," and a new tale of holiday mayhem.

I read this book every year around the holidays. Kind of surprised that some were a bit startled by the admittedly "cynical" (I'd say stringently satirical, but to each his own) of some of the stories. Any Sedaris reader should know sentimentality is rarely an aspect of his work. The Audio version (read by the author) is worth it if only to hear Sedaris' rendition of "Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer" as sung by Billy Holliday.

Santaland Diaries was funny, especially as I've worked retail. Bits of it bordered on the snide, but the other pieces were too cynical to be humorous. Nasty cracks about fat kids and sarcasm about parents in Christmas pageants isn't funny or even witty to me. Cheap shots as an excuse for humor is the last resort of the failed comic.

Definitely not my favorite of his, and I am a huge Sedaris fan. Although I do enjoy hearing his writing in his own voice, his attempts at fiction are awkward and mostly not funny. "Jesus Shaves," "Santaland Diaries," and "Six to Eight Black Men" were the only redeeming stories for me in this collection.

I'm a Sedaris fan and enjoyed the entertainment! Yes, cynical (maybe too much sometimes), but funny.

I really liked the story about taking a job as a Santa elf, but otherwise I found the stories too cynical, and I didn't finish the collection.
