Garrison Keillor returns to the little town we love and continues to chronicle the lives of our favorite folks.

Lake Wobegon is in a frenzy of preparations for the Fourth of July. This being Wobegon, lives collide and relationships develop in the oddest ways. Take Clint Bunson, the treasurer of the Lutheran church and the auto mechanic who starts cars on below-zero mornings. For six years, he has run the Fourth of July parade, turning what was once a line of pickup trucks into an event of dazzling spectacle.

The town is dizzy with anticipation—until they hear of Clint’s ambition to run for Congress. They know about his episodes with vodka sours, his rocky marriage, and his friendship with the 24-year-old who dresses up as the Statue of Liberty for the parade and may be buck naked beneath her robes.

In Keillor’s words, “It is Lake Wobegon as you imagined it—good loving people who drive each other crazy.”

Baker & Taylor
Having transformed the annual Fourth of July parade into a Lake Wobegon extravaganza, steadfast mechanic Clint Bunsen attracts the attention of the governor and the media before announcing his intention to run for Congress, an endeavor that is compromised by his drinking and rumors about an affair with a young woman. Simultaneous.

Classic Garrison Keillor. Long-time resident in the small, northern American town of Lake Wobegon, Clint – husband of Irene, father to 3 grown children, co-owner, with his brother Clarence, and auto mechanic of Bunson’s Motors – has carried on his father’s role as chair of the organizing committee for the town’s Fourth of July celebrations (parade, fireworks etc). This will be his last year running the event and he has fallen in love with a younger woman and so is taking stock of his life, trying to decide what his future will be. Many other characters and storylines intermingle with Clint’s as events unfold, with chaos and mishap before equilibrium is, of course, finally restored. Very funny, human and more effective for being read by the author in the 7 CD set.
