If you want to know how two people act when they put friendship and each other first, watch this movie! Excellent soundtrack.

Once is a unique experience. You kinda get the sense that you're watching real life. And as a street musician myself this was a nice treat - not to mention the original tunes featured in the movie are great!

I watched this after seeing the musical. I didn't know until watching that this is a home made movie. Obviously shot with an SLR home camera. Most is shot hand held with no consideration or adjustment for lighting. Street scenes were shot with people standing around watching.
Acting and singing isn't as professional as the camera work. I wouldn't have finished watch the film if I didn't want to compare it to the musical.

Overall very poor.

Great film, with great music!

My favourite song: "When Your Mind's Made Up"

amazing musical Irish movie. a story of street singer met girl accidentally. Although the story is so simple, the music and songs are amazing. I think this movie was entirely filmed by a hand-cam. But that made it more pure and perfectly defines its amateur characters. It was very interesting and amusing.

I am picky. Otherwise I would have given 4.5 stars to this successful combination of musical and drama of non-Hollywood style.

This is a really lovely movie about how strong bonds form between people when they make music together. I had never heard of Glen Hansard, so I was surprised and amazed at the music in the movie. Toward the end I kept dreading the "inevitable" Hollywood happy ending that we've seen a million times. It didn't happen! Bonus marks for that.

"Oh, broken-hearted Hoover fixer sucker guy
Oh, broken-hearted Hoover fixer sucker, sucker guy
One day I'll go there and win her once again
But until then I'm just a sucker of a guy"

From Once--"Falling Slowly"--Duet (Lyrics)

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

[Chorus]
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You'll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

[Chorus Repeats]
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice

You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing it loud
