Finding himself in a new house without any friends and nothing to do, Matt creates an imaginary land, Mattland, in the mud, and ends up with a welcome surprise.

Perseus Publishing
Matt is miserable. The subdivision where he now lives is surrounded by nothing but muddy fields of rocks and sticks. But when Matt ventures out, his imagination kicks in. He draws a muddy, winding line and names it Snake River. A pile of rocks becomes the Dog Tooth Mountains. Just like that, Mattland is born. Soon a little girl shows up with a handful of helpful odds and ends. Piece by piece, she and Matt expand their new world with popsicle-stick bridges and scrap-paper boats. And when a rainstorm finally threatens to wash everything away, all the neighborhood kids appear and help stave off the flood. Evocative of childhood friendships and with sublime illustrations that brighten in color as the story progresses, Mattland is an inspiring ode to cooperative play.

This is an especially good story for anyone who is moving - it's about a child who is new to a neighbourhood, and the world he creates for himself and the new friends he makes as children join him and join in the game. I love Dusan Petricic's work so wanted to borrow this book for the illustrations alone - but the story is lovely too.

This is a perfect time of year to read Mattland. The students enjoyed making their own "Mattlands" in the muddy yard after reading the book.

Matt's land was made from mud. I think that is cool. (Adelaide--age 6)

Our school library has not received a copy of this book yet. Either has the school in a neighboring town! I hope it comes in before voting is done!
