In this sequel to Grimes's Biting the Moon, Andi Oliver, amnesiac and drifter, is still running from the memory - her only memory - of an occurrence in a Santa Fe bed-and-breakfast. Forced to invent details of her past as she manages to hang on to a precarious present ("Lying," says one co-worker, "it's what the girl does."), Andi moves from one small-town job to another across Idaho, across Montana, and into North Dakota. In Dakota she gets herself hired at Klavan's, a massive pig farming facility that specializes in the dark art of modern livestock management. As Andi begins to uncover the truth about Klavan's and its sister facility, Big Sun, a stranger out of her past, who has been stalking her for more than a year, appears at her door demanding information of which she has no memory. Dakota signals the return of one of Martha Grimes's most intrepid heroines, a young woman who invents her life step-by-step as she moves through a landscape that throws up one danger after another. Set against the breathtakingly expansive background of the plains, Dakota will reward Grimes's legion of fans, and readers of western literature as a whole.

Amnesiac drifter Andi Oliver moves between waitressing jobs throughout the country until a discovery at a livestock facility renders her a target of two men, including a hired gunman and a pursuer who would claim something from her forgotten past.
Young Andi Oliver is an amnesiac and drifter who awoke in a Santa Fe bed and breakfast with a man's belongings tossed about the room. Adopting a name from the initials on her backpack, Andi moves from one waitress job to the next, from Idaho to North Dakota, until she takes a job at Klavan's, a massive pigfarming facility that specializes in the dark art of modern livestock management. As Andi begins to uncover the truth about Klavan's and a slaughterhouse called Big Sun, two men are on her trail, one a gunman hired to kill her, another who has followed her across three states demanding something from her forgotten past.--From publisher description.

I felt like I was baited and then the content was switched. I kept reading this disgusting book because I hoped to find out what happened to the girl with amnesia. Frustratingly, I had to endure reading about pig farming and slaughtering scenarios. I wouldn't have felt so suckered if both the animal mishandling was addressed as well as finding out about the heroine of the story. If I would have known what the book was REALLY about, I would never have borrowed it! What I wish I had done was gone against my practice of not spoiling the story by reading the ending, early on. I like mysteries but will never read another Martha Grimes book again! Totally unsatisfying!

Grimes never solved the central mystery of the book: who was Andi, the central character, and what happened to cause her amnesia? I was left hanging which made me feel very dissatisfied.

This was a real page-turner. There were only one or two chapters that were not as interesting, but the story is golden.
