This book is still relevant 10 years later. The fungi and pathogens may have morphed and the invasive species list may have grown yet more thick but the situation has not gone away. Au contraire. As with all of Nikiforuk's books, I couldn't put this down. Not that common with non-fiction. Tough stuff to learn about, but the author is with the reader all the way, just enough to keep us from sinking into the proverbial sea of despair. For too long. There was a resounding "thuck" as I removed my head from the sand about these dire global situations. In a good moment I can think that if each person who reads Pandemonium plagues at least 3 people he or she knows with juicy bits of mind-boggling information gleaned from the book (hard NOT to do) and goes on to make the corresponding changes in his/her lifestyle, as outlined at the end of the book, then perhaps a few refugia will yet endure on Planet E.

Pandemonium b y Andrew Nikiforuk. Be afraid. Be very afraid. In this thought-provoking, spine-tingling, downright scary book, Andrew Nikiforuk has crafted a work as shockingly frightening as any novel. Unfortunately, the subject matter of his book is not make –believe; it is breathtakingly real and downright scary.
Our world is skating on very, very thin ecological, biological ice. Nikiforuk examines a plethora of destructive culprits that have the potential to cause a great deal of havoc. Emerging diseases; global warming; mad cow disease; ecological upheavals and instability; invasive species; rapidly evolving plant and animal diseases prepared to destroy our crops and livestock; weaponized viruses and bacillus; hospital-grown diseases: all of these are just part of a list of very terrible pestilences that are just waiting in the wings to gobble us up.
This book is so engrossing it virtually reads itself: I could barely put it down until I got to the last page.
Doing research for World Issues? Have a look at this book. It’s very well-organized and crammed full of material. Not only that, but it’s a good read too.

Written in a completely accessible style, read this book and - "Be afraid, be very afraid." And also be shocked by the general incompetence of various agencies that have allowed us to get here. Very well written. Scary reality.
