🕵️‍♂️ This strange detective yarn is in the noir tradition, until it veers sideways into a supernatural thriller. Mickey Rourke is hired by DeNiro to find a singer who's been missing for ten years. Well, voodoo and dead bodies turn up in profusion, and a smart audience will see the twist ending coming down the road, but it's still shocking because of its amoral attitude. Lisa Bonet has a heavy-duty R-rated sex scene, not to be missed!

Released in 1987 when Bonet was 20 years old. An original occult horror detective thriller with hard to forget characters and an intricate story set in gritty NYC and New Orleans during the 1940s and 1955.

This is a classic case where an excellent actor (Robert DeNiro) simply can not carry the entire cast for the movie and a crappy script. Another bad Mickey Rouke movie.

The treatment of Afro-Caribbean religion in this movie is indefensibly gratuitous & inaccurate, & that really is too bad, because otherwise it's a pretty excellent film & one I've enjoyed watching many times. Interestingly the action of the book takes place in New York City only, so the New Orleans portion is an innovation in the screenplay. It's moody, sexy, with a certain decorative occult horror element throughout, & what I think is a pretty cool surprise ending. One of my favorite moments always comes with the bayou baptism...you get this sense of the weight & sorrow & desperation of human religion, the paces & programs we run, always trying like hell under imperfect circumstances to somehow hit that fleeting moment of rapture. Five stars in black veils scrubbing blood off the walls...! CR

Yeah, this voodoo noir is pretty bad. Mickey Rourke did used to be a pretty good looking dude (what happened?) and had a certain sleazy, brooding charm, but he also projected an arrogance that didn't match his modest talent. At the time, this received attention for the graphic sex scene between him and Lisa Bonet, who was still on the very wholesome "Cosby Show." To show you how obvious this movie is, Rourke's private dick character is named Angel and Robert De Niro's is named Louis Cyphre (get it? Lucifer!). De Niro is creepy and understated, but also seems understandably bored with the movie's slow pace and convoluted (but not interesting) plot. Rourke seemed to like steamy sex and was also in "9 1/2 Weeks" and "Wild Orchid." Also see the remake of "Cat People," "The Serpent and the Rainbow," and "The Big Easy."

I certainly view Angel Heart as being director Alan Parker's statement about his deep-rooted hatred for blacks. I mean, Parker certainly went well out of his way to emphasize racism in this picture and make blacks out to be the most gullible, voodoo-loving fools imaginable.

Angel Heart is definitely one of those frustratingly confused and convoluted stories that (in all of its demented confusion) gives away its surprise, twist ending far too early in the story.

And, once again, I'm absolutely baffled about what brought actor Mickey Rourke his vast popularity in the movies of the 1980s. He sure didn't have a likeable screen-presence nor did he have any noteworthy talent to speak of. I just don't get it.

Yeah. OK. I will admit that Angel Heart did contain some very striking imagery, at times, and the fairly explicit sex scene that took place between the Epiphany and Angel characters was quite startling to behold, but, with that said, this film was a certified limp-wrist as far as its "noir" aspect was concerned. And, yes, it certainly fell flat on its face when it came to the impact of its horror element, as well.

Great movie. Mood piece. No idea why the low ratings from some. If you don't like the genre don't watch it.

Yes one of De Niro's worst movies

This movie whilst entertiaining and exciting to watch has little to do with the real world of voodoo.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”
