Family outcast April lives in a beat-up apartment in New York's Lower East Side with her boyfriend, Bobby. In order to spend some time with her dying mother, April invites her conservative suburban family to her place for a Thanksgiving feast. While she frantically tries to complete the meal, the family drives in from Pennsylvania sharing less-than-pleasant opinions about April's lifestyle. Her dad tries to think positively, while sister Beth flaunts her good-girl status and brother Timmy captures it all on film.

Fabulous acting by actors who have gone on to more established careers - Allison Pill and John Gallagher who play brother/sister and went on to play a romantic duo in Newsroom; Patricia Clarkson who is always extraordinary; Katie Holmes who shines in this film; Sean Hayes from Will & Grace; Isaiah Whitlock who has played in Suits and Veep; and so on. Superb directing, smart and wonderful offbeat.

Made on a shoestring budget over the course of two weeks, Peter Hedges has combined the best elements of a classic road movie (a trek to New York City is fraught with hilarious complications) with a poignant family drama which elicits the occasional tear between all those chuckles. His cast practically live their roles and their efforts are made all the more believable by a low-keyed cinematography that makes the most of its natural settings whether it be a quiet interlude in a snowy woods or a collection of sad balloons hanging from a peeling stair bannister. A bittersweet slice-of-life movie whose comical elements never stray too far from the heart.

comedic (mostly) w/some drama as it's about family and doesn't that just sum it up, family. Very 21 century cultural interaction, very eye opening to parents I suppose as they let go and try to stay in touch. Just a real good showing of life's events and how they cascade. Quoting a well known scholar, some peoples kids...yeah, and some kids parents!
