This journey through Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland is undertaken by the author as a brave affirmation of life and all that she holds most dear—her love of the English countryside, especially when experienced from the back of a horse, and her appreciation of her mother who first introduced her to this unique way of travelling. In her childhood, she was bounced around Southern England in pony carts and on horseback accompanying her slightly eccentric mother on visits to friends, picnic outings and more prolonged camping trips. In later life she is diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoes treatment. As soon as she is strong enough, she undertakes this journey that is enlivened by recollections of her unusual childhood as John Betjeman’s daughter, her 60’s youth, and her well-connected married life.
