John Wayne vs. Robert Duvall. It's just as awesome as you'd expect. Only one problem: Kim Darby is SO annoying. Other than that, this is a very good western.

The iconic John Wayne---in one of his last Westerns---meets a young woman committed to avenging her father's murder. Once you get past the trope of 'spunky young woman against the odds', the plot does a good job of depicting the federal marshal's hand in taming the West. Lured by her money reward, Wayne plays up his character's hard-living, tired drunkenness and also a real commitment in pursuing justice. Glen Campbell shows up as the Texas Ranger also pursuing the killer. Colorado's valleys and mountains are pretty scenery.

A true western cowboy movie. Filmed in 1969 but remains a classic. Watch for the Colorado towns.

This is the original "True Grit" which won Best Actor Award for John Wayne at the 1970 Academy Awards. In "True Grit" John Wayne is an older law man named Rooster Cogburn. He is no longer the fastest gone but he still can out smart just about anybody. He is aided by Glen Campbell as a Texas Ranger by the name of LaBoeuf. Now Glen Campbell didn't get many parts in westerns, but he is up to the job in "true Grit". The bad guys are headed up by Robert Duval, Dennis Hopper, Strother Martin and Jeff Corey. "True Grit" has a sense of humor in looking at the limitations of John Wayne's character. It is fun to see Wayne making jokes about himself. This was a real change for John Wayne fans who were use to their man taking on everybody at anytime. He is wiser now and it is a joy to watch the Academy Award Performance by John Wayne.

A classic western that I will never tire of watching. John Wayne is just sensational in "True Grit". He was such a legend and wonderful actor worthy of the excellent script he was provided in "True Grit". Not that he had to carry the movie on his own back. The entire cast is flawless, including Glenn Campbell who we think of a singer but not an actor. A great movie for anyone who enjoys a classic western film.

Sorry to all those who liked the remake. I liked it, too. But it does not even come close to this fun, adventurous, western classic. The trio of John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Kim Darby create a chemistry rarely seen in today's cinema. Look for a stellar supporting cast including Strother Martin, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper. I highly recommend this classic.

Another excellent Western from Henry Hathaway (The Sons Of Katie Elder). I find it hard to believe this was John Wayne's only Best Actor Oscar (e.g. The Searchers). Co-starring 'The Rhinestone(less) Cowboy' (Glen Campbell), Kim Darby and her boy's haircut, (who I found annoying when I first saw this many moons ago, but she's grown on me over the years -- she's got spunk and goes toe-to-toe w/Wayne... everybody actually), Robert Duvall, Strother Martin, and Dennis Hopper (who routinely got the crap kicked out of him in so many Westerns... exceptionally brutally this time). I was pleasantly surprised with the Coen bros. remake, too. I couldn't pick a better actor to carry on Rooster Cogburn than Jeff Bridges. There will always only be one Duke, though. Good stuff. FIVE STARS.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Coen Brothers/Jeff Bridges version but the Duke's version is still the best, with Robert Duvall demonstrating the potential to be the great actor he became.

Both versions of this classic movie appear valid. The book must be pretty good to have inspired two feature films over the years. In both films its a question of who you prefer as more larger than life character. Wayne and Bridges both do a great job in somewhat different ways. The newer version of the film expands more on what happens to the girl at the end. The older one concentrates more on how her dad was wrongly murdered in the beginning of the story.

One of John Wayne's best movie.

Ned Pepper: "What's your intention? Do you think one on four is a dogfall?" Rooster Cogburn: "I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. Which'll it be?" Ned Pepper: "I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man." Rooster Cogburn: "Fill your hands, you son of a bitch!"
