Compulsive neatnik Felix Unger (Jack Lemmon) is thrown out of his house by his divorce-bound wife. He wanders aimlessly through the streets of New York, toying with the idea of suicide, before gravitating to the apartment of his best friend, incorrigibly sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison (Walter Matthau). Worried that Felix will try something desperate, Oscar, himself in the process of being divorced by his wife, invites Felix to move in with him. Within a few days, this mismatched pair is on the verge of mutual murder: Felix cannot abide Oscar's slovenliness, while Oscar is driven insane by Felix's obsession with cleanliness. A potentially passionate evening with Oscar's neighbors, the "coo-coo" Pigeon sisters (Monica Evans and Carole Shelley) is ruined when Felix, ruminating over his wife and children, reduces the two ladies to remorseful tears. Pushed to the brink, Oscar stalks around the apartment making as big a mess as possible. Comes the next week's poker game, and the previously vengeful Oscar is worried that Felix might have attempted to do away with himself again. Instead, a surprisingly self-confident Felix shows up to collect his belongings, then announces that he's temporarily moving upstairs with the toothsome Pigeon sisters!

THE ODD COUPLE really holds up as a smart dramedy (or comedy, if you want to ignore the more serious elements of the story), the basis of many dynamic duos in pop culture since. Without THE ODD COUPLE, we'd have no LETHAL WEAPON, no TOY STORY, no TWO AND A HALF MEN. The buddy genre owes much to THE ODD COUPLE. I appreciated the clever jokes and how well crafted it all is. It's as I expected, though, considering the status this film possesses still to this day. I recommend it.

The CPL copy is badly scratched. If you get it, return it and ask for a copy from another location.

A Five Star Comedy Classic from Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau. The remaining cast members are all great character actors and do a great job. This may be Neil Simon's most popular work of writing as it was both a hit both as a movie and a play. Most of the movie is just like the "Odd Couple TV Show" which played for years. There are so many funny situations these two characters can get into. It is the story of two completely opposite personalities living together. I can see why both men were divorced. If you haven't seen the "Odd Couple" you are missing one of our countries finest comedy classics!.

The Classic Matthau/Lemmon collaboration at it's finest.

Oscar:
"It took me 3 hours to figure out that F.U. stood for Felix Unger!"
