One of the author’s best in the series. Complex, thought provoking character studies with plenty of twists and turns. One does have to suspend the belief somewhat that Barbara rolls the dice with her career, yet, on the other hand, she is…

This author comes highly recommended and this happened to be the first book I picked up. It appears I made the wrong choice when attempting to read this author's books. This book was dreadfully boring and annoying! The first hundred…

Having read the comments posted on this book, I knew what I was getting in to when I decided to read it. I basically just skimmed over the Italian bits, because the author kind of explained a lot of what was said immediately after,…

Have a Italian to English dictionary handy. Maybe Ms. George is learning Italian and has lumbered the readers with it.

Is it possible to love the characters but hate the author? I find myself wondering if she's including all the tedious details so her trips to wherever the current book is based are tax deductible! This one had the added frustration of…

Strongly plotted, with George's usual attention to the completely human side of her characters. The nesting mysteries emerge organically from the desperately believable emotions.

excellent read. I am totally enamored of this author. I can't wait to read another

Started but never finished! Tedious, convoluted, too many offshoot plots, and waaaaay too long! Wish EG would get back on track with Lynley and Havers.

I have always been a fan of Ms George. Havers & Lynley are such delightful characters. Ms George's attention to (local) detail - particularly for someone who lives in Washington State is superb! Her knowledge is encyclopedic but she made…

Needed better editing. The book was too long for what is was.

I love Italy...and Elizabeth George. This is a wonderful novel, great continuation of the Barbara Havers - Thomas Linley saga. So entertaining and interesting. The author is able to continue the team's story and add new dimensions,…

i think that's it for me: the previous novel was bad, and this one is worse. having read every single book george had written up to now, this will be the last one. disconbobulated -just like this word! plot; and droning on and on details…

Big book and big disapppointment. I heartily agree with the negative comments below. I became very frustrated with reading this book and just wanted to get it over with.

Have to agree with a previous review. This book is awful. Ms. George seems more intent on practicing her Italian than engaging her readers. I have enjoyed many previous Lynley/Havers novels, but this one was a chore and a huge…

This should have been two books! The story was far too long with too many twists and turns and minutiae for just one book. I gave up reading on page 518 and flipped to the end of the book to see how things turned out. Prior to that I…

I did nothing but read until I'd finished it, and it's a whopping big book too. Can't agree with the negative reviews, I thought it was one of the best, enough plot twists and turns for four novels, and some moments written so clearly I…

What's with the Italian with no translation? Do I have to pull out my English-Italian dictionary to read this book? And, yes, it is way too long. As others have noted, prior Lynley/Havers books were really fun reads but NOT this.

I agree with others who have commented on this book - I didn't get very far into it, and was fed up to the point of not even caring how it turned out. The Italian words peppered all over the place were just annoying, and so unnecessary. …

I usually love the Lynley/Havers series, but this one was a disappointment. Far too long and drawn out. The use of Italian was distracting and annoying. Donna Leon does it well in her series - one can discern the meaning without knowing…

what a waste - the book was far too long - so much so I started to skim over chapters! - and every part of it was an unsatisfactory conclusion to a story that had been developed over a large number of books... the book was not the least…

I finally got through this tome with some judicious skipping which I never thought I would have to do with this author. I found the book way too long, tedious and somewhat unnecessarily complicated. I also found the use of Italian very…

The evil act was writing this potboiler.

reviews of this book have called it way too long. Also, B Havers as angst ridden is criticized as "is this character development?"

This one is too much. By far. I've given up on Elizabeth George, Lynley, Havers et al.She's lost the plot. There is no comparison with her earlier Lynley novels. Italian policing is best left to Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti while the…

aye carumba! or whatever the Italian version is...I was looking forward to the next installment of Lynley and Havers - and I read half this book and skimmed the rest - something I NEVER do! I was so ashamed I picked it up again to force…
